Zemplen Protected Landscape
(27,000 ha)
Where most of Aggtelek and Bukk are built up from limestone, the origin of the Zemplen hills is volcanic. The result is that there are much less rocky outcrops, but nevertheless very good and extensive grasslands. The forests are younger then in Bukk and Aggtelek, but thanks to a nestbox project, Zemplen hosts the largest Ural Owl population in Hungary. The Zemplen hills support a large raptor population. It is the only location in Hungary where you might find the Golden Eagle. Because it is more to the east, there are many more Pallas’s Fritillaries then in Bukk and Aggtelek. Farm Lator doesn’t visit the area regularly, because of the distance and all animals but the Golden Eagle live also in Bukk or Aggtelek. It is nevertheless a beautiful area with stunning landscapes.
